When you are doing Data Mesh: Stop talking about Data Mesh!
Data Mesh Dystopia: When the Buzzword Overtakes Its True Purpose
I hate the term Data Mesh. I think it is overused, misused and by now purely a marketing term without any proper meaning.
Apart from that I believe that if you are “doing Data Mesh” and continue to talk to other people within or outside your organisation about working on a Data Mesh, that you are hurting yourself with it. This is an intervention!
Hear me out, Data Mesh was and is never going to be about Data Mesh! It is about enabling your organisation to scale and deliver business value easy and fast through data. By promoting Data Mesh, you are moving away from this premise. Data Mesh is just a internal implementation detail, that enables you to become fully data driven at scale over an entire organisation that is hugely siloed off. The users of your Data Mesh and your Stakeholders do not care about this internal implementation Detail. They want to use data and generate business value. Don’t do Data Mesh for the sake of doing Data Mesh.
So next time you talk with people about what you are doing, tell them you are enabling your domain teams to use data at scale and deliver business value with data.
Stop feeding the Data Mesh beast!
I know that this might be a controversial opinion to people and I would love to discuss with you, please let me know in the comments, seriously!
